Student Required Course Work
During the MCY year medical students have a one-week required course at the beginning of the surgical rotation. The curriculum involves lectures on inhaled drugs, local anesthetics, pain management, oxygen therapy and assessment of the sick patient, given by faculty and fellows. They spend time in our simulation center, honing IV and airway management skills. They are also introduced to the ORs, working one-on-one with residents and can practice airway management and IV placement on patients. They also participate in a multidisciplinary professionalism discussion group, with the emphasis on professional behavior in the ORs.
