Caleb Ing, MD, MS appointed Division Chief for Pediatric Anesthesiology

Caleb Ing

Caleb Ing, MD, MS, Associate Professor of Anesthesiology (in Epidemiology), has been appointed the next Division Chief of Pediatric Anesthesiology and the next EM Papper Professor of Pediatric Anesthesiology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC). A visionary physician‑scientist, Dr. Ing brings a remarkable blend of clinical expertise, scholarly achievement, and dedication to mentorship—qualities that have long distinguished his service to children and families at CUIMC and NewYork‑Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital (CHONY/MSCH).

After a national search, Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology Meghan Lane-Fall, MD, MSHP, FCCM, announced the appointment on January 21.

A Columbia-Trained Clinician and Leader

Dr. Ing received his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center before completing his internship in internal medicine, anesthesiology residency, and pediatric anesthesiology fellowship at Columbia. He joined the faculty in 2009.

For the past 16 years, he has served as both a general pediatric anesthesiologist and a pediatric cardiac anesthesiologist, caring for some of the highest‑acuity patients at our institution and from across the country. Throughout his tenure, he has strengthened clinical operations and cultivated collaborative relationships across departments through sustained service on major committees. As the division expands its clinical footprint, Dr. Ing will continue to partner closely with the outstanding members of the Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology, as well as with surgical, pediatric, and critical care teams.

Dedicated Educator and Mentor

A committed educator, Dr. Ing has supported learners across all stages of training for more than a decade. His mentees have achieved noteworthy publications, national awards, and independent grant funding. He is a long‑standing co‑instructor of the Clinical Epidemiology course at Columbia’s Mailman School of Public Health and serves as a methods mentor for the Columbia Summer Research Institute. As division chief, he will continue to help guide residents and fellows and advance the division’s educational mission.

Nationally Recognized Researcher

Dr. Ing’s research program, recognized nationally for its impact, investigates how anesthesia, surgery, and perioperative factors influence long‑term neurodevelopmental and behavioral outcomes in children. He has authored nearly 70 peer‑reviewed publications and has served as principal investigator or co‑investigator on multiple federally funded grants from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, as well as foundation awards from SmartTots and the American Society of Regional Anesthesia. He currently serves as associate editor of Pediatric Anesthesia and on the editorial board of the Journal of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology.

Transition and Future Leadership

Dr. Ing will assume the role of division chief in the coming weeks, succeeding Interim Chief Dr. Robert Kazim. He will also work closely with Dr. Richard Levy, Division Chief of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology, to coordinate pediatric anesthesia care across CHONY/MSCH. Following Dr. Levy’s retirement in March, Dr. Ing will assume leadership of both divisions, supported by dedicated clinical and operational leaders in each area.

Gratitude and Recognition

The department extends sincere appreciation to Dr. Kazim for his steady leadership since 2024. His commitment to clinical excellence and support for faculty and trainees have been invaluable. The department also thanks the members of the search committee for their thoughtful and rigorous review process.

Looking Ahead

Dr. Ing’s exemplary service to the division and to CUIMC has already made a lasting impact. In his new role, he will continue to advance patient care, medical education, and research, while strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration and elevating the division’s national profile.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Ing on this significant and well‑deserved appointment.
