Project PReCISE launches: Aims to drive sustainable perioperative practice

Project PReCISE (Perioperative Resource Consumption & Inventory Strategy Engine) was launched this month by Anjan Saha, MD, PhD. The project builds on the department's sustainability initiative, led by Dr. Steve Mercer, by applying data-driven strategies to reduce clinical waste. The first pilot of Project PReCISE focuses on laryngoscopy; specifically, decreasing disposable blade use and increasing adoption of the McGrath laryngoscope system. Dr. Anjan Saha, Dr. Robert Maniker, and Christian Bourgeois, CRNA, are leading this effort at the Allen Hospital, the project's launch site.

Pilot Objectives

  • Reduce waste by limiting disposables and supporting reusable technologies.
  • Leverage purchasing and clinical data by collaborating with our hospital sourcing team for supply chain transparency and with clinical informaticians for Epic utilization data.
  • Optimize and standardize patterns by comparing purchasing trends with real-world use, setting benchmarks for future inventory management.

Team Collaboration: Project PReCISE is a multi-institutional effort. Data from partner hospitals is collected by our team to aggregate and analyze key metrics. Analytics will be returned to participating sites to inform further improvements and promote sustainable clinical practice. Updates will follow as preliminary findings become available and as we assess the impact of reduced disposable blade use across services.

Why it matters: Project PReCISE puts sustainability into action by turning data into decisions that align clinical excellence with environmental and fiscal responsibility.
