Dr. Vivek Moitra, the Allen I. Hyman Professor of Critical Care Anesthesiology, is the Department of Anesthesiology's first Vice Chair for Strategy. The appointment was announced today by Chair Dr. Meghan Lane-Fall.

Dr. Moitra has more than 20 years of clinical, operational, and academic leadership across Columbia and NewYork-Presbyterian. He has served as program director of the Critical Care Medicine Fellowship, division chief for three ICUs, and chair of the NYP Critical Care Council. His accomplishments have advanced quality, operational integration, research infrastructure, and national visibility for the department.

He currently serves as a director of the American Board of Anesthesiology and has key roles within other organizations that shape the future of training and practice in the field. He is an accomplished scholar, a fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine, an elected member of the Columbia University Academy of Clinical Excellence and the Virginia Apgar Academy of Medical Educators, and he has been honored with multiple teaching awards.

Dr. Lane-Fall writes, "A key part of my role is to set the vision and direction for our department. In his new role, Dr. Moitra will serve as the department’s architect and engineer for that vision, partnering with me to translate the vision into ambitious but reachable goals."

The vice chair for strategy is responsible for shaping the multi‑year strategic plan; advancing financial modeling and future‑focused growth initiatives; expanding innovation in perioperative care, ICU integration, and digital health; and strengthening intra-institutional partnerships. "Central to the role is stewardship of the 'virtuous cycle' of academic medicine: ensuring that clinical excellence, research advancement, faculty development, and financial strength reinforce one another to drive departmental success," writes Dr. Lane-Fall. "Dr. Moitra has already been working with me to define metrics for some of our strategic priorities, and this new role is a natural outgrowth of that work."
