The overarching goal of our research is to inform safer perioperative practices for vulnerable children who require surgery and anesthesia. We aim to determine whether anesthesia, surgery, and related perioperative factors influence the risk of neurodevelopmental deficits and other complications in children.
Recent and ongoing work also evaluates prenatal influences—such as maternal anesthesia, labor analgesia, and substance exposures—as well as early childhood factors, including age at exposure to surgery and anesthesia, anesthetic duration, invasive mechanical ventilation, and intraoperative physiology. By integrating epidemiologic methods with diverse data systems, we seek to distinguish exposure-related risks from confounding influences and ultimately improve safety in pediatric populations.
