Gebhard Wagener, MD appointed Vice Chair for Student and Trainee Clinical Research

We congratulate Gebhard Wagener, MD, the new Vice Chair for Student and Trainee Clinical Research in the Department of Anesthesiology.

This is a new role, part of a design to continue the department’s tradition of superb comprehensive training for future leaders in the field. Dr. Wagener is uniquely suited to this position; his career is an exceptional synthesis of clinical practice, teaching, and research.

Dr. Wagener cares for the most complex patients at CUIMC/NYP as chief of vascular anesthesia, as an expert in liver transplant anesthesiology, and as an intensivist. Also, in early months of the pandemic, Dr. Wagener was invaluable as a leader of the department’s COVID-19 task force; he was a catalyst for resolving a multitude of clinical complications that shifted on a daily basis. As the director of the COVID-19 Clinical Guidelines Committee at NewYork-Presbyterian, and as a member of the COVID-19 Management Group, he participates in leading the pandemic response across all 10 campuses of the hospital.

His research focus is complex liver and vascular disease; other projects include renal and lung physiology, inflammatory response, and projects associated with treatment of COVID-19, including hypercoagulation events in patients with the disease. He is an editor for several journals, has edited a textbook about liver anesthesiology and critical care medicine, now in the second edition, published more than 50 papers, authored nine book chapters, and has been invited to speak about liver disease and transplantation at dozens of meetings worldwide.

Within the department and in the CUIMC community, Dr. Wagener has been honored for his talents as physician, investigator, and educator. Last fall, as senior author on “Acute kidney injury after cardiac surgery: A comparison of different definitions,” he was awarded first prize in the department’s annual research competition. That manuscript was published in Nephrology (2020, 25:212). He is a member of the Academy of Clinical Excellence, a recipient of the department’s Kathryn Cozine Teacher of the Year award, and recently was named Physician of the Year by the CUIMC/NYP nursing staff.

As Vice Chair for Student and Trainee Clinical Research, Dr. Wagener will develop the tools and resources to assure a vigorous, research-intense biomedical education for learners, whether they plan careers as clinicians or physician-scientists.
