Defining What Matters Most

Quality Planning Domain Function: establish strategic quality priorities and goals to meet customer needs, allocating resources accordingly. The customers include patients, staff, other departments, the institution / hospital, and regulatory / governing bodies. This is accomplished through leadership engagement, by ensuring that key QI and QC focus areas have clearly defined aims and metrics, and by adjusting our service models / pathways / team structures when necessary. 

Facilitated by:

  • Department Chair, Executive Vice Chair, Vice Chair for Strategy
  • Core Anesthesiology QPS Team
  • Quality Executive Council, with input from other leaders including division chiefs

How Priorities Are Selected

Departmental quality priorities are identified through periodic analysis of:

  • Clinical performance and outcome trends
  • Patient safety events and system vulnerabilities
  • Regulatory and institutional requirements
  • Operational challenges and workflow inefficiencies
  • Feedback from faculty, staff, trainees, and interdisciplinary partners
  • Emerging technologies and other opportunities for innovation

Current Departmental Quality Focus Areas

  • Perioperative glycemic control
  • Environmental sustainability
  • Reducing postoperative respiratory complications
  • Reducing postoperative acute kidney injury
  • Transfusion medicine optimization and stewardship
