Whole System Quality

A Framework for Quality Excellence in Anesthesiology

Quality is not simply the response to isolated events, nor a collection of independent projects. It is the operating system through which our department delivers safe, effective, equitable, and continuously improving care. Whole System Quality is the Department of Anesthesiology’s integrated framework for advancing excellence across clinical care, operational performance, patient safety, and continuous improvement. Rather than viewing quality as isolated projects or reactive event review, this model connects four essential domains — Quality Planning, Quality Assurance, Quality Control, and Quality Improvement — into a unified system for identifying priorities, measuring performance, responding to risk, and driving measurable change.

Whole System Quality 4 Piece Puzzle

Defining strategic priorities based on patient needs, operational goals, regulatory expectations, and departmental vision.

Strengthening systems that identify, review, and respond to safety events while promoting accountability and learning.

Monitoring performance through real-time dashboards, metrics, and escalation pathways that support informed action.

Driving structured initiatives that translate data and insight into measurable change.
