Facilities & Equipment

The Margaret Wood Center for Simulation and Education (MWCSE) is located on the 5th floor of the Presbyterian Building, at the center of the Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) campus. It is conveniently 5 minutes’ walking distance from any direction on campus, and is easily accessed from surrounding medical center buildings, including the operating rooms in the Milstein Hospital and Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital. It is a thoughtfully designed simulation education space well suited to Columbia University Medical Center’s busy healthcare environment. The space may be utilized for the entire spectrum of simulation learning activities ranging from interdisciplinary team and crisis resource management training to highly focused skills and task training.

Our facility features the following:

  • Operating Room with one-way mirror
  • ICU/PACU Room with one-way mirror
  • Control Room with fully integrated audiovisual system
  • Conference/Debriefing Room
  • OSCE/Virtual Reality Training Room
  • Task Training Workroom

The operating room and ICU/PACU spaces are fully equipped to create a realistic environment. The operating room is furnished with an anesthesia machine, surgical table, and Steris medical lighting system, including an anesthesia column with fully functional vacuum, piped oxygen, and medical air, as well as wall-mounted LCD monitors. The ICU/PACU space has an ICU bed and also boasts wall-mounted LCD monitors and a fully functional piped oxygen, medical air, and vacuum system.

The OSCE/Training Room provides a flexible education space, utilized for both self-directed learning as well as faculty-led OSCE training sessions. The debriefing/conference room has an integrated video conferencing system with 3 LCD monitors at the front of the room. The rear of the center holds ample storage space for medical and simulation supplies, including an additional anesthesia machine.


The Simulation Center offers a variety of simulators and equipment, including:

  • Draeger Apollo anesthesia machine
  • GE anesthesia machine
  • Philips CX50 ultrasound machine
  • Zoll defibrillator
  • Verathon Glidescope
  • Storz Fiberoptic scopes

  • Adult and Pediatric airway models
  • Central Line and IV access models
  • Lumbar Puncture/Epidural models
